Elizabeth Blackadder, Scottish, b. 1931
After studying at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art Blackadder married the painter, John Houston and lectured in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art from 1962-86.
Blackadder's first solo exhibition was held in 1959 in Edinburgh, since then, solo exhibitions of her work have been held almost every year to date, both nationally and internationally.
Blackadder is the first woman ever elected to membership in both the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. During her career, Blackadder has experimented with a range of printing media including lithography, etching, aquatint, drypoint, woodcut and screenprint beginning with her student days in the early 1950s. Her first prints were published in 1958.
She lives and works in Edinburgh.
