John Hoyland, British, 1934 - 2011
Hoyland was a major exponent of Abstract Expressionism, developing a bold use of colour and abstract interrelating forms in his art."Non-figurative imagery possessed for me," he wrote, "the potential for the most advanced depth of feeling and meaning."
He participated in group exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, the Barbican Gallery, and the Serpentine Gallery. He was elected RA in 1991. In 1999 was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools.
His work was inspired and influenced by his extensive travels around the world to America, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, and South America and by his close friendships with contemporary artists such as Anthony Caro and Patrick Caulfield.
John Hoyland died this year and will be greatly missed in the art world by all who had the pleasure to know him.
